Hi all,
Today I wanted to share some of the artistic things that Lola has been up too. Here is a picture of a dog. I love it so much. It has so much character. She goes off by herself for sometimes an hour or more and just creates stuff. I wish I could be that free. I hope I can always protect that time for her. This is her first comic. I did not even know that she was aware of comics. We do not have any and I do not get the newspaper. (Don't worry, I read it online.) It is funny the cultural references our children pick up that we are not even aware of them being exposed to. We are truly all in someway or another influenced by what is going on around us. This is Super Girl. Her power is being invisible. She has a side kick. Her side kick is a bunny named Kipper. I think they may be saving a dog, there in the tree. Well, happy 4th!
I finished the Keep Me Warm vest for Roan and of course it does not fit. I made one major mistake. It calls for size 10US needles. I used size 10mm which is size 15US. So the vest was the right length but for a much huskier child. I tried to shrink it and that helped a little but not much. I think I may have persuaded him to wear it anyway. After all it is only to keep warm and we have a while until he needs to keep warm again. I realized though that I have a hard time following directions. This goes for almost anything - cooking, putting together a kit and knitting. I guess I like to do my own thing but I also think that has to do with being practical. I don't mind spending more to make myself something but I just can't afford to spend so much money on each new knitting project and I do find that every project needs something new. The pattern might call for a size needle I don't have so I will use the next closest size that I do have. Or the project might call for bulky yarn and I only have worsted. In my knitting experience so far, which as you can tell is pretty limited, more often than not winging it does not work.

...my first and probably last bowl of fresh peas from the garden steamed with butter and a pinch of salt. We did not plant that many peas.
...a new fire pit created with pavers from a knocked down wall
...a simply craft that is easy and fun for all ages. I think I got the inspiration for this from Maya Made but honestly can not remember.

... With Ginny. I am finally back to knitting. I was missing it. I am making a Keep Me Warm vest for Roan and reading Simplicity Parenting. The book is great! Right now it is talking a lot about getting rid of stuff and simplifying choices for kids. I usually go through and clean out toys every season. I had just finished doing this when I got this book. So I went through and did it again and was able to get rid of a lot more. So far none of it has been missed. In fact, when my daughter got home from school she was so thankful for her clean room. This book is also prompting me to rethink birthday parties. I have been struggling with this for a while. I want to have a party for my kids and invite all their friends but I don't want all the gifts. At the same time, I don't want to prevent them from getting and opening gifts. I want my kids to know that the party is about celebrating with their friends and family but I also do not want them to be disappointed. I had some ideas but none seemed to fit our family. I spoke with my son's teachers and they had some wonderful ideas. I think we are going to try a book or art party. We will ask the guests to bring a book or small art supply to the party — a package of crayons or markers — anything really art related. Roan's birthday is in August. I will let you know how it goes!

{this moment} - A Friday ritual. A single photo - no words - capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember.
I have been dying to do some sewing ever since my mother and I finished Lola's communion dress (more about that later) but needed to find both the time and the right project. Then I found the most cute pillow cases at a yard sale. And so they became these!
